Get To Know...
Darnell Heywood Director of College Counseling
Family:
"I live in German Village with my husband Will and our two little boys:
Liam, a 5-year-old, and Charlie, who is three. We have a Portuguese Water Dog named Louie, which is short for Louisiana because I grew up
in New Orleans."
Hobbies: "I love cooking, reading and outdoor activity like hiking, canoeing and all of that."
Philosophy: "My overall philosophy on college counseling is really that what we are trying to do through this whole process is get kids to reflect on who they are, what they believe in, what their goals and aspirations are, and to do research about the colleges to really find a good match. It's also a great opportunity for kids to learn about how to present themselves, how to interview, how to write essays and talk about who they are and what they believe in."

School communications continue to evolve
You may have noticed a new look to this year's Viking Voice. In addition to a redesign, the weekly online
newsletter will change days to Wednesday afternoons from now on, giving us a
better ability to cover weekend events and avoiding many of the no-school
holidays that often delayed the old Monday afternoon distribution. Deadline for submission consideration is now
noon on Mondays for that week's newsletter but please allow as much lead time
as possible. Please e-mail your
submissions to bob_lee@columbusacademy.org. Also, the summer issue of Academy Magazine should have arrived in
your mailboxes last week. If not, please
notify us at the e-mail address above.
You can view the online version of the magazine by clicking here (and
please note that on Page 4, current sixth-grader Ella Ransom was misidentified as her twin sister Riley in an Around Academy photo - we sincerely
apologize to both for the error).

Last newsletter for Class of 2008 students/parents
This marks the final newsletter that will be
sent to Class of 2008 members and to their parents (unless a younger child is
enrolled at CA for the 2008-09 school year).
If you would still like to receive the Viking Voice, please send an
e-mail to bob_lee@columbusacademy.org
with your current address. As a farewell
to the Class of 2008, we offer some end-of-year photos by David Block because
they are simply too good not to share.

Contact public school districts for bus information
For those Columbus Academy students who will
utilize public school transportation for this upcoming school year, please be
advised that specific questions regarding routes, pick-up and drop-off times,
etc., are best directed to your respective school system's transportation
department. Please be advised that each
public school district handles transportation needs a bit differently. Generally, however, many school systems post
routes and detailed information on their Web sites sometime in early-to-mid-August.
For more information, contact your
school district's transportation department (click here for school district contacts). General transportation questions may be
directed to Kathy Webner at 509-2224.

Sports News
Believe it or not, the fall 2008 sports season
is already underway with the boys golf

of 315, which was 10 strokes behind Granville and 32 strokes better than
third-place Bexley. Meanwhile, what
should be a very promising girls tennis
campaign (see press clips for preview) began yesterday with a 5-0 sweep of Ottawa Hills. Season-openers for the remaining varsity fall
sports are as follows: cross country on Aug. 20 at the New
Albany Invitational, boys soccer on
Aug. 21 at Northland, girls soccer on

PACA News
The Parents' Association of Columbus Academy
(PACA) will once again be collecting donations for the "Kids for Kids" Holiday Clothing Drive. So if you are cleaning closets and don't want
to store the unused items until November, a truck will be located in the Art
Entrance/Lower School turnaround on September 4 from 7:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
so that you can drop off your gently used clothing (sizes infant through
adult), toys, books and bicycles. We ask
that you separate dress code clothing from other clothing and encourage you to
bring winter coats of all sizes. For more
information, please contact Ann Boeckman
at 253-3108 or rpboeckman@aol.com.
Also, please mark your calendars now for the 26th
Annual Charlie David Dinner on October
10. It will be an evening of food, fun
and games for the kids culminating in the football team's 7:30 p.m. home game
against Heath. Over the next two months,
keep an eye out for more details on this very popular event.
