Kindergartners paired with Senior Buddies
2008 ConvocationColumbus Academy's traditional Convocation Ceremony was held last Thursday in the North Gymnasium.  After welcome speeches from Headmaster John Mackenzie P'15 and Student Council President Austin Bening '08, members of the Class of 2008 and Class of 2021 were paired together.  The Senior/Kindergarten Buddies then walked out of the gym hand-in-hand to their first event of the school year.  To see photos from the event, including a snapshot of each Senior/Kindergarten pairing, please click here for Part 1 and here for Part 2.

Parents' Association introduces SEED for parents
The Parents' Association is very excited to be offering a new program to CA parents this year.  While SEED is new for parents at CA, this program has been used in schools in the U.S. and abroad for 22 years, and CA Middle School teacher MaryEve Corrigan has been running a SEED group for CA faculty for more than 16 years.  SEED stands for Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity and offers participants the chance to consider issues of multi-culturalism and diversity, especially with regard to our own school community, and within the context of our personal life stories.  The group, limited to 20 parents, will meet over the course of the year, once a month for nine months, from 6-9 p.m.  Dinner will be provided.  Joyce Simson P'08 will lead the group.  More detailed information, including the meeting schedule, will follow.  Please contact PACA Parent Education Chair Lee Szykowny (Zeke162@aol.com ), PACA President Ken Brown (KBrown@sbcadvertising.com) or Joyce Simson (jrs@ix.netcom.com) with questions.

Upper School News
Academy's College Counseling office encourages parents to attend the "Colleges that Change Lives" event at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, at the Aladdin Shrine Center.  The CTCL program features admission officials from the schools profiled in the third edition of Colleges that Change Lives by Loren Pope.  The program begins with a panel discussion designed to encourage students to make the college search process a well-informed journey, and a college fair follows that discussion.  The event is free and pre-registration is not required.  For more information and directions, please click here.

All ninth-grade parents are invited to a Ninth-Grade Parent Coffee at 8 a.m. on September 23 at Caribou Coffee (1370 N Hamilton Rd in Gahanna).  New parents are especially encouraged to come.  If you have any questions, please e-mail grade mom Donna Simmons at psimmons10@aol.com.

Scrip orders available now through September 12
PACA is pleased to be offering the Scrip program once again.  Last year, Scrip raised over $7,000, which was given to the school in the form of PACA grant money to benefit our children and the school's programs. Our program offers the convenience of buying gift cards from all kinds of retailers like Lands' End, Kohl's, Giant Eagle and Starbucks. The retailers rebate a portion of your gift card purchase amount back to the school. This rebate can be up to 17 percent. You get the advantage of having the Scrip cards to use at the places you usually shop or to give as gifts, while the school gets the benefit of a regular source of income. Click here to download the forms and details.  Please continue to reload the Kroger cards that you have purchased through our Scrip program.  For questions, please email Cindy Poehlmann at cwpoehlmann@sbcglobal.net. Thank you for your support.
