Get To Know...
Patricia Killoren Middle School Assistant Librarian
Family:
"My husband Bob works for Ohio State. Three of our four children are grown up and
Rachel is a senior here at CA. She
started here as a sophomore when we moved from State College, Pa.,
two years ago. We live in Gahanna less than five
minutes from campus."
Philosophy:
"I love the Middle School library because it is
really busy with students who come in to get books, do research and just
learn. We have to teach them to be
effective users of information because that's where the future is - knowing how
to find information and using it to make decisions."

Upper School News
Save the date... Upper School Parents Night is
Wednesday, September 17. The evening
starts at 7 p.m. in Schoedinger Theatre.
After opening remarks from various administrators and parent
representatives, you will have an opportunity to meet your child's teachers and
advisors as you follow their schedule through a condensed academic day. The purpose of the night is to put "a face
with a name" and to get a brief sense of what your child's "teacher is like,"
NOT to create opportunity for individual discussion about individual students. The school will provide you with a copy of
your child's schedule when you sign in on the 17th in the Schoedinger Theatre
lobby. I look forward to seeing you on
campus! ~ Shane MacElhiney, Head of Upper School
The student club GROW, which focuses on gender
relations, held a lunch-time book discussion on "Why Women Should Rule the
World" by Dee Dee Myers on Monday. Follow-up
discussions will be held on each of the next two Mondays. Everyone is welcome, including students and faculty
members from all three divisions.

Middle School News
Don't
forget that this evening's Middle School
Parents' Night will
begin at 7 p.m. in Schoedinger Theater with brief introductions and sharing of
some general information. At about 7:35
p.m., parents will leave the theater and visit with teachers in classrooms and designated
areas to hear about the curriculum that will be covered in the different
subject areas. Upon arrival, fifth- and
sixth-grade
parents can proceed directly into the theater to be seated. Parents of seventh- and eighth-grade
students, please arrive a few minutes early to retrieve your child's schedule
at the table in the theater lobby. And
for more information about the upcoming MS Parent Forums, please click here.
This year's Tutoring
Café will have its first meeting on Wednesday September 17. The Tutoring Café is a free service available
to all Middle School students on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15-4:00 p.m. in
the MS library. Upper
School students and representatives
from both the US
and MS faculty will be available during these times to assist Middle School
students with any academic area. Please
make your children aware of this service and encourage them to use this
valuable resource. Arrangements can be
made with coaches if your child needs to miss part of a practice for academic
reasons. For more information, please
contact Michelle Platt at michelle_platt@columbusacademy.org.

Lower School News
Armando Hernandez, a visiting teacher from Mexico,
served as the guest of honor at the Lower
School's monarch butterfly release ceremony on
Monday. Academy students had raised the
butterflies and tagged them so that their migration to the winter sanctuary
near Hernandez's hometown of Angangueo,
Mexico, can be
followed by the students' computer programs.
To see photos from the event, click here for this week's Around Academy gallery. A cameraman from ABC 6 News was on hand but the story
was bumped from the newscast. If a copy
of the unaired story can be obtained from the station, it will be made
available as a video link in an upcoming Viking Voice.
Be sure to check out the recently released Fall
After School Activities brochure to see what programs might interest your
child (grades PreK-6) . Activities include drama, yoga, art,
ballet, chess, gardening, knitting, fashion design, jewelry-making, modern
manners/etiquette, Spanish and sports-related programming such as swimming,
gymnastics, wrestling, basketball and horseback riding. Click here for the online brochure.
