Academy still adjusting to loss of school days
The unexpected power outage and resulting days off earlier this week have caused several changes to the upcoming school calendar.  Please be aware that the Late Start Day planned for this upcoming Wednesday has been cancelled, so classes will begin at their normal 8:05 a.m. time that day.  Upper School Parents Night has been rescheduled for this upcoming Wednesday (7 p.m. in Schoedinger Theatre) and the Annual Fund Parent Note-a-thon has been moved to Wednesday, October 15 (6-8 p.m. in the Dining Hall).  The 7th Grade Parent Forum and 5th Grade Parent Forum have not yet been rescheduled.  Keep in mind, though, that Picture Day, MS Parent Conferences and US Service Day are all still on schedule for next week.  Another calendar change down the road is that the US theater department's fall production of "See How They Run" has been moved to November 7-8.  For an up-to-date school calendar, please click here.

CA alum's documentary premiers on History Channel
102 Minutes DVD
A documentary co-produced by Greg Jacobs, a 1987 graduate of Columbus Academy, had its world premier on the History Channel last Thursday night.  Titled "102 Minutes That Changed America," the film reconstructs the morning of 9/11 in real time using only audio and video from that morning - no narration or after-the-fact commentary.  Click here to see an early review of the documentary.

Upper School News
Upper School Parents Night has been moved to Wednesday, September 24.  The evening starts at 7 p.m. in Schoedinger Theatre.  After opening remarks from various administrators and parent representatives, you will have an opportunity to meet your child's teachers and advisors as you follow their schedule through a condensed academic day.  The purpose of the night is to put "a face with a name" and to get a brief sense of what your child's "teacher is like," NOT to create opportunity for individual discussion about individual students.  The school will provide you with a copy of your child's schedule when you sign in on the 24th in the Schoedinger Theatre lobby.

All ninth-grade parents are invited to a Ninth-Grade Parent Coffee at 8 a.m. on September 23 at Caribou Coffee (1370 N Hamilton Rd in Gahanna).  New parents are especially encouraged to come.  If you have any questions, please e-mail grade mom Donna Simmons at psimmons10@aol.com.

Middle School News
If you have not already signed up for your Parent Conference on September 25-26, please do so by contacting Tina Cantrell at tina_cantrell@columbusacademy.org or 509-2264 (phone lines are working now).  The conference format remains unchanged, including no classes for the Middle School on Friday, September 26.

The first meeting of the MS Tutoring Café has been moved to Wednesday September 24.  The Tutoring Café is a free service available to all Middle School students on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15-4:00 p.m. in the MS library.  Upper School students and representatives from both the US and MS faculty will be available during these times to assist Middle School students with any academic area.  Please make your children aware of this service and encourage them to use this valuable resource.  Arrangements can be made with coaches if your child needs to miss part of a practice for academic reasons.  For more information, please contact Michelle Platt at michelle_platt@columbusacademy.org.

Lower School News
School pictures will be taken on September 23-24.  Students in grades PreK-3 will have their pictures taken on Tuesday while fourth-graders will be photographed on Wednesday.

The Lower School Library is proud to announce that the Parent Resource Collection is now conveniently located in the Lower School Lobby.  The collection contains books devoted to general parenting, homework, social development and many other topics.  The check-out procedure is simple and is found on the bookshelf.  Please stop by and browse at your convenience!

Also, anyone interested in finding out more about the Spring Break trip to Mexico should plan on meeting in Dianne Griffin's lower school science lab (Room C-008) at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 25.

Arts & Music News
Charlottes Web
Academy eighth-grader Michaella Cipriani (pictured center) is currently starring in the Columbus Children's Theatre production of "Charlotte's Web" at their Park Street Theatre through October 5.  Michaella plays the role of Fern in the musical version of E.B. White's beloved classic.  For more information, call 614-224-6672 or click here.

Sports News
Varsity FootballAll parents, students, faculty and staff are welcome to pick up extra copies of the Fall 2008 Sports Program (click here for online version) at the reception desk in Academy Hall.  The additional copies are available on a first-come basis.  The volleyball program's Volley for the Cure night will be this upcoming Tuesday, September 23, with a JV game at 5:00 p.m. and the varsity match at 6:30 p.m.  Team members sold shirts and hoodies to help raise money for breast cancer awareness.  Tuesday also marks the only home cross country meet of the season for the Vikes.  The Middle School and varsity races will begin at 4:30 p.m. next to Marsh Field.  Girls tennis is the top-ranked Division II team in the state.  As an example of their domination, the Vikings won all five matches against Fisher Catholic yesterday by 6-0, 6-0 scores.  The varsity football squad, which improved to 3-1 with a 41-7 win over Whitehall in last Friday's MSL-Ohio opener, plays at Granville tonight.  In the Dispatch area coaches poll, Granville (4-0) is ranked second in Division III while the Vikes are fifth in Division V.  Look for field hockey, golf and soccer updates (as well as all the latest press clippings) in Wednesday's regularly scheduled Viking Voice.

Parent SEED program to begin on September 23
The Parents' Association is very excited to be offering a new program to CA parents this year.  While SEED is new for parents at CA, this program has been used in schools in the U.S. and abroad for 22 years, and CA Middle School teacher MaryEve Corrigan has been running a SEED group for CA faculty for more than 16 years.  SEED stands for Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity and offers participants the chance to consider issues of multi-culturalism and diversity, especially with regard to our own school community, and within the context of our personal life stories.  The group, limited to 20 parents, will meet over the course of the year, once a month for nine months, from 6-9 p.m.  Click here for meeting dates.  Dinner will be provided.  Joyce Simson P'08 will lead the group.  Please contact PACA Parent Education Chair Lee Szykowny (Zeke162@aol.com ), PACA President Ken Brown (KBrown@sbcadvertising.com) or Joyce Simson (jrs@ix.netcom.com) with questions.
