Ken Brown
Parents' Association President

Family: "I am a CA graduate from the class of '75.  Along with my wife Blythe, we have two children at CA, Michael '09 and Daniel '11, and a daughter at CSG, Kelly '15.  We live in Bexley."

Philosophy: "The theme for this year's Parents' Association is 'Leave A Legacy.'  We have asked every committee to reinvent itself with a fresh, innovative approach to their responsibilities.  I am very fortunate to have a great board willing to commit time away from personal, family and business life to serve the school and parent community.  I invite you to come to a meeting and see all the new work that is going on."

Celebrate with CA at Charlie David Dinner this Friday
2008 Charlie David Dinner Logo
This Friday, for the 26th year, the Charlie David Dinner will bring together the whole Columbus Academy community with food and festivities prior to the Vikings' home varsity football game.  The much-anticipated event - which raises funds for CA's athletic programs and includes great food, free Boardwalk games for the kids, a silent auction and raffles - will run from 5:00-7:30 p.m. in the Dining Hall and Barton Room.  Click here to see the updated list of silent auction items.  To donate additional items, please contact Jeff Jeffers at jeff@garths.com or 740-815-1094.  Also, please consider becoming a Charlie David Dinner sponsor.  For more information and a "wish list" to designate where your contribution will be spent, click here.  Tickets are $10 (free for ages six and under) and can be purchased at the door.

Lisa Ling chosen as this year's Celebration speaker
Lisa LingLisa Ling, known to millions around the world as the first-ever woman host and correspondent of the hit National Geographic series Explorer and as special assignment reporter for the Oprah Show, will speak to Columbus Academy students on November 12, 2008.  Later that day, Ling will speak at the fifth annual Celebration of Leadership event, generously hosted and sponsored by school parents Abigail and Les Wexner.  Ling is the fifth guest speaker in CA's Annual Fund Celebration of Leadership Series, following in the footsteps of Sam Donaldson (2004), John Walsh (2005), Cal Ripken Jr. (2006) and Christopher Gardner (2007).  Celebration of Leadership is a thank you and a stimulus for CA's Annual Fund leadership donors (gifts of $2,500 and above).  Invitations and further details about the day's events will be coming soon.  Click here to see Ling's bio (courtesy of Keppler Speakers).

2008 Reunion Weekend begins Friday morning
2007 Reunion BuddiesColumbus Academy's 2008 Reunion Weekend will take place this Friday and Saturday, October 10-11.  Festivities begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Dining Hall with the Golden Alumni Luncheon for all classes celebrating reunions of 50 years or more.  The Reunion Buddy Reception, which matches alumni with fifth-grade buddies, will begin in the Dining Hall at 1:30 p.m. with campus tours ending in Schoedinger Theatre for a 2:30 p.m. production of "The Academy Stream" by the Class of 2016.  The State-of-the-School update will be at 3:15 in the Theatre followed by the Former Faculty Reception at 4:30 in the Senior Quad, the Charlie David Dinner (see above) at 5:00, the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction of Maxwell Stevenson '95 at 6:45 and kickoff of the Vikings' home football game against Heath at 7:30.  Reunion Weekend wraps up with CA's sixth annual OSU Tailgate at noon Saturday and individual class parties both Friday and Saturday evenings.

School's first Late Start Day is next Wednesday
Next Wednesday, October 15, will be the first Late Start Day of the school year.  This means that classes will not begin until 9:30 a.m. for all three divisions because of professional development sessions for the faculty and staff.  For families needing to drop off their children at the normal time, Lower School students can go to the CASE room beginning at 7:30 a.m. while Middle School students can go to the MS Library.  Both rooms will have adult supervision.  Upper School students should find a quiet place to study or read.  Students in grades 9 through 11 who are scheduled to take the PSAT, however, need to report to the Upper School for attendance by 8:05 a.m.  For this school year, other Late Start Days will be on November 12 and February 11 with Early Dismissal Days (school day ends at noon) planned for January 12 and April 20.

A reminder about e-mail, directory and class list uses
As a community that includes a number of businesses, occupational endeavors and other non-profit organizations in which our parents and alumni are involved, Columbus Academy discourages the marketing or promotion of such entities through the school's e-mail, directory, class lists or other provided contact information.  We encourage those families who wish to advertise or promote their specific interests to do so through available vehicles such as advertising in sports programs, The Academy Life student newspaper, or by becoming a sponsor of the Charlie David Dinner or PACA's spring fundraiser.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Upper School News
The Upper School's Fall Semi-Formal Dance (also referred to as Homecoming) will be held Saturday, October 18, from 8-11 p.m. in the Dining Hall.  The faculty-chaperoned event calls for boys to don jackets and ties while girls wear cocktail-length dresses.  Ticket prices have not been set but will be no more than $10.  Also, if you would like to donate a 200-300 pound pumpkin that can be carved and decorated for the dance, please contact Jeanette Paras at parasgroup@aol.com or 614-766-5347.

All 12th-grade parents are invited to a parent get-together at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, at the home of Ron and Jill Dean.  If you are planning to attend the boy's soccer district tournament game that evening, please stop by after the game.  If you have not already sent your RSVP, please contact Jill at rdean64183@aol.com or 855-0242.

A get-together for 11th-grade parents is scheduled for Saturday, October 18, from 8-10 p.m. at Hoggy's (corner of Morse and Johnstown Rd.).  For more information, please contact Nancy Hughes at lhughes6@columbus.rr.com or 614-595-9794.

All ninth-grade parents are invited to a parent get-together at 7:30 p.m. on November 15 at the home of Ivan and Sharon Fong.  Mark your calendars now for this fun evening with new and old friends.  New parents are especially encouraged to attend.  More details to come.  If you have questions, please e-mail grade mom Donna Simmons at psimmons10@aol.com.

Middle School News
Please look for an e-mail from Middle School Head Magnus Maccow later this week.  The letter will include links to important documents for all Middle School families.

As eighth-grade parents await the arrival of their children from the Washington, D.C., trip on October 24, they are encouraged to have dinner and chat with other eighth-grade parents at Max & Erma's restaurant on the corner of Hamilton and Morse.  An area that seats 25 people has been reserved for 6:30 p.m. so no individual reservations are required.  The buses are expected to arrive at 8:30 p.m. but that can fluctuate based on traffic.  For more information, please contact Cindy Poehlmann at cwpoehlmann@sbcglobal.net.

Sports News
Field Hockey Senior NightSenior Nights are upon us, meaning postseason tournaments are just around the corner for Columbus Academy's fall sports teams.  The varsity girls soccer team will host its first-ever home tournament game this upcoming Monday at 7 p.m. under the lights at Marsh Field.  The lady Vikings, who assured the program's first winning season with a 5-0 shutout of West Jefferson last Thursday (see their Senior Night photos in this week's Varsity Sports gallery), will host Amanda Clearcreek in the Division II district tourney on Monday.  The boys golf team, meanwhile, will be competing in its sixth-straight state tournament this weekend at the Players Club at Foxfire (click here for directions).  The Vikes, who finished second in the state last year, will tee off at 9:56 a.m. Friday on hole #10 and 9:00 a.m. Saturday on hole #1.  At roughly the same times this weekend, CA freshman Morgan Ransom will be playing in the girls' state golf tournament at the Ohio State Gray Course.  On Tuesday, October 14, the CA field hockey squad will host Olentangy Orange at 4 p.m. in the state qualifying tournament.  The volleyball, cross country and boys soccer teams will begin district competition on Saturday, October 18.  In girls tennis, the top-ranked Vikings will compete in districts this weekend at CSG followed by the state tournament on October 18 and the team final four on October 19 at Ohio State.  More Senior Night photos and playoff action will be included in next week's Viking Voice.  In the meantime, check out this week's press clippings.

Parents' Association News
Dan VorenbergDan Vorenberg, Head of the Lower School, will speak at the next Parents' Association Meeting on Tuesday, October 14, from 8-9 a.m. in the Trustees' Room.  Every meeting is open to all parents.  In addition to Mr. Vorenberg, the Lower School will be highlighted in this month's meeting by faculty members Donna Saide and Vicki Cremer along with some LS students.  Also, more information on the new Spring Gala will be shared.  Bring a friend and catch up on all the parent community news!

Parent volunteers are still needed for Friday's Charlie David Dinner.  If you are available to work the 4:45-6:15 p.m., 6:15-7:45 p.m. or 7:30-8:00 p.m. shifts, please contact Rachel Lichten, PACA volunteer coordinator, at rachelgordonlichten@yahoo.com.  Volunteers are also needed for 1-2 hour shifts at the Viking Corner table in the LS lobby during the morning of LS conferences on October 24.

Scrip orders are now available for pick-up at the reception desk in Academy Hall.  The administration building is open from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each school day.
