Thank you for giving to the Annual Fund this year
Tuition covers 87% of the cost to educate our
students, leaving a gap of $2,600 per student which the Annual Fund helps to make up.
The bottom line is that the Annual Fund is NOT for extras - it is for
the day-to-day essentials of running the school, such as paying the salaries
and benefits of our terrific faculty.
Now, more than ever, your support is critical for the school's future
success. Thank you to those who have
already given to the Annual Fund this year (click here to see donors as of 11/3/08).
For those families who are able to make a gift
at a leadership level (gifts of $2,500 or more), please remember that the
deadline to RSVP for the fifth annual Celebration
of Leadership event featuring special guest Lisa Ling on November 12 is this Friday. Ling is known to millions around the world as
the first-ever woman host and correspondent of the hit National Geographic
series Explorer and as special
assignment reporter for the Oprah Show. To RSVP (click here for invitation) or for
further information, please contact the Development Office at 614-509-2256.

Obama and McCain split CA's mock election vote
In mock elections held by Columbus
Academy's Middle School and Upper School,
President-elect Barack Obama was
widely preferred by the older students while McCain won the Middle School race
by a single vote. In the Upper School
election held yesterday, Obama garnered 55 percent (196) of the student and
faculty vote as opposed to 41 percent (147) for John McCain. Click here for
a complete breakdown, including by gender and by class. In the Middle School online election held
last Tuesday, McCain earned 137 votes to Obama's 136. A class-by-class breakdown shows Obama
winning grades 6, 8, 10, 11 and 12 while McCain won in grades 5, 7 and 9.

Holiday Project update from the CA Service Board
Thanks to the generosity of the Academy community, all
32 of our sponsored families will be receiving two weeks worth of meals with their holiday meals and clothing
delivery. Many, many thanks for helping
this worthy cause! Also, even though the
clothing drive ends today, toys will still be collected through the end of the
week.

Free firewood offered to Academy families
"You've probably noticed a few fallen trees
around campus as a result of the storm damage last month," says Director of
Facilities and Grounds Doug Bennett. "These trees were cut into logs and many have
been used by the science classrooms to enhance outdoor learning areas. Now, though, the school wants to make this
wood available to the Columbus
Academy community. The landscape crew has relocated all of the
cut logs to the service road next to the white steel gate that leads to the
lower athletic fields. Anyone interested
in obtaining a log or two (some of these are very large and weighty) from the
pile, please feel free to contact Security
at 394-3403 to let them know when you will be on campus."

Upper School News
The College Counseling office will host a Financing College Program this upcoming
Monday, November 10, at 7 p.m. in Schoedinger Theatre. All Upper School
students and their parents are invited to attend. Tally
Hart, who is senior advisor for the Economic Access Initiative at The Ohio
State University, will lead the program, which many families in the past have
reported as "the most helpful college counseling program they attended all
year." Applying for financial aid is
complex, and there are strict deadlines.
Plan to attend!
Also, a reminder that next week, Thursday,
November 13, is the next Upper School
Parent Coffee. The coffee will be
held in the Dining Hall and feature our college counselors, Darnell Heywood and Chris Jones. Please submit questions to US Head Shane MacElhiney at shane_macelhiney@columbusacademy.org,
as the Q and A will be limited to questions that he receives ahead of time.
Please note
these two phone number changes to the front of the Directory-Handbook: the number for the Upper School Office is 509-2281 (not 337-4300 as listed on Page 5),
and Co-Dean of Students Sheri Dillon
can be reached at 509-2227 (not at her old number of 509-2121 as listed on Page
6).
And please make note of our performing arts schedule over the next two weeks and come out and
support our talented and hardworking students and faculty.

Scrip orders available now through November 17
It is time for your holiday order of Scrip! Gift cards make great gifts for friends and
family, allow young drivers to pick up groceries on the way home from school,
and offer a controlled entertainment "credit card" for young teenagers. Our program offers the convenience of buying
gift cards from all kinds of retailers like the Gap, Kroger's, Robeks and
Starbucks. The retailers rebate a
portion of your gift card purchase amount back to the school. This rebate can be up to 17%. You get the advantage of having the Scrip cards to use at the places you
usually shop or to give as gifts while the school gets the benefit of a regular
source of income. Click here to download
the forms and details. Please continue
to reload the Kroger cards that you have purchased through our Scrip
program. For questions, please e-mail Cindy Poehlmann at cwpoehlmann@sbcglobal.net. Thank you for your support.
