Today (Wednesday, August 27) marks the start of Columbus Academy’s 98th school year. With a full-capacity enrollment of 1,057 students that includes 537 boys (50.8 percent), 520 girls (49.2 percent) and 238 students of color (22.5 percent), Academy truly offers a coed and diverse environment. According to new Admissions Director John Wuorinen ’80, who graduated from Academy 30 years ago with the enrollment (529) almost exactly half what it is today, 15 percent of the student population receives a school-record total of $1.5 million in financial aid. Due to the remnants of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Fay, the traditional Convocation Ceremony to begin the school year has been rescheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. Click here for the school calendar.
A warm Academy welcome goes to the 13 new faculty/staff members on campus this fall. The new faces are First Grade Assistant Teacher Jennifer Barren, Development Office Coordinator Jeannine Hamilton, Director of College Counseling Darnell Heywood, Morning Receptionist Evelyn Kelley-Antoine, Middle School Assistant Librarian Patricia Killoren, Head of Upper School Shane MacElhiney, Data Entry Coordinator (Development Office) Trisha Mayhorn, Upper School Mathematics Teacher Dan Olexio, Fourth Grade Assistant Teacher Anne Ramsey, Dining Hall Director (SAGE) Michael Ray, Accounting Assistant (Business Office) Terri Reed, Administrative Assistant to the Headmaster Kathy Webner and Upper School Counselor Megan Webster. From June 14-22, a group of Columbus Academy students and faculty members traveled to New Orleans to help rebuild homes still in need of repair after Hurricane Katrina. Led by John Wuorinen ’80 – former dean of students and new admissions director – the participants learned safe techniques and habits in renovation projects while also experiencing cultural activities. All of the Academy students who made the trip satisfied their graduation requirement of 45 off-campus hours of service. Click here to see Wuorinen’s photos from the trip.
